Learning Resources® Introduces Step-by-Step Handbooks for Teaching with Math Manipulatives
Grade-leveled Lessons are Aligned with NCTM Standards

Vernon Hills, Ill., May 1, 2006 —National and state standards mandate or recommend the use of manipulatives in teaching mathematics, and Learning Resources®, a leading provider of  manipulative-based classroom materials, is launching a series entitled, “Hands-On Standards: Photo-Illustrated Lessons for Teaching with Math Manipulatives,” to assist teachers in easily integrating manipulatives into their math curriculum and meeting standards.

Each spiral-bound “Hands-On Standards” handbook in the series features easy-to- follow,  step-by-step photographs and illustrations using common manipulatives for more than 50 grade-level math lessons, each of which are aligned with National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards and Expectations.

“Teachers often have manipulatives in their classrooms, but aren’t always certain  how to best incorporate them into their lessons, or simply don’t know how versatile they are in teaching a wide range of math concepts,” said Eric Toriumi, senior marketing manager at Learning Resources. “We’ve developed these handbooks to provide teachers with a quick and easy way to learn how to use manipulatives along with their existing math curriculum.”

The lessons in each handbook provide a manipulative-based framework that will enable teachers to advance their students from concrete to abstract comprehension, which provides a much greater chance for their success on standardized tests.

“Studies have proven that learning is enhanced when children acquire knowledge through active processes, and manipulatives provide an effective, engaging and active
way for children to learn math,” said Toriumi. “With manipulatives, children can connect ideas and integrate their knowledge to build a thorough understanding of mathematical concepts.”

Each “Hands-On Standards” is divided into five sections—Number and Operations, Geometry, Algebra, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability—that reflect the NCTM content strands. “Hands-On Standards” handbooks are available for PreK–K, Grades 1–2 and Grades 3–4.

The “Hands-On Standards” handbook for PreK–K retails for $34.95, and the handbooks for Grades 1–2 and Grades 3–4 retail for $44.95. All are available at local teacher specialty stores and at www.LearningResources.com
