Holiday Gifts for Teachers: Survey Finds It’s Not the Gift That Counts, It’s the Thanks and Effort

Vernon Hills, Ill., December 3, 2007 — A mug, gift card or apple knickknack? Parents often rack their brains trying to find the perfect gift for a teacher, but a recent survey of teachers indicates that they would rather a thank-you and effort on the part of parents and students than a gift. The survey of 1500 elementary teachers was conducted by Learning Resources, a manufacturer of hands-on educational products for the classroom and home.
The majority of the teacher respondents (74%) picked “being involved in their child’s education” as the best way for parents to show their appreciation. A “simple thank- you” was selected by 22% of the respondents. “Helping out at school” was selected by 3.3% of the teachers, and only 1.1% selected a gift as the best tokens of appreciation.
As far as students go, 43% of the survey respondents selected doing good class work and 35% picked a simple thank-you as the best ways for students to show their appreciation.
