Grades: 3-5
Whole Class
10-15 Minutes
1. Draw on students' prior to knowledge by asking them what they know about making inferences when they read. Through discussion, lead the class to the conclusion that making inferences is using information provided by the author together with your own knowledge to draw a conclusion or to read between the lines.
2. Use Luna to show
detailed, theme-based
photographs or collages
to the class. Explain that
each photo or collage is
based on a theme.

3. Challenge students
to infer what the theme
is for each photograph
based on the items in
the photo. Have students write their ideas about inferences on paper, display them with Luna, and discuss with the class.
4. Then have
students create
thematic picture
puzzles for other
students to explore
playing a game of
"I Spy." Students
may use a
photograph taken
of a collection of
objects or a collage
created from cutting
and gluing magazine pictures. Have students write a sentence telling classmates what to search for, such as Look for two animals that fly, three amphibians, and an animal that lays eggs.
5. Have students self-assess their thematic puzzles using the attached rubric. Have students explain why they scored themselves as they did.
6. Have groups of students select a theme and create a digital picture, exploring websites for inspiration. Students create pictures using software and use Luna to show pictures to the class.
