Elmano Costa could conduct a presentation in Portuguese on mathematics, language or literacy, and whether or not you understand Portuguese, you would understand him. He is passionate about showing educators that, with the right materials and methods, they can help students learn in spite of language barriers.
Dr. Costa’s passion is driven by his memories of coming to the United States from Portugal as a 10-year-old, unable to speak English and faced with the daunting task of understanding lessons taught in a language he didn’t know. From his struggles in remedial reading classes as a fifth grader to his completion of a doctoral degree, he dreamed about making life easier for ELLs.
In his work as a teacher, principal and director of bilingual education, Dr. Costa has dedicated his energy to creating instructional settings where ELLs can be successful. His professional efforts have helped create effective ELL materials, tools and workshops while his academic research has explored attitudes and achievements of bilingual students and parents. His insight and perspective entertains and enlighten ELLs, teachers and parents.
Dr. Costa earned his bachelor’s degree in History (and a minor in Math) and master’s degree in School Administration from California State University, Stanislaus, and his doctoral degree in School Administration from the University of the Pacific. For the past 11 years, he has been a professor of Teacher Education at California State University, Stanislaus.
