Johnette R. Winfrey is a math specialist at Kenilworth Middle School in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in math education and certification in educational administration from Southern University in Baton Rouge. For 14 years, Johnette has taught and tutored students in elementary, middle and high school math. She was named Middle School Teacher of the Year for her district in both the 1995-1996 and 2005-2006 school years and has been awarded several special grants.
Johnette has a passion for working with children, and she goes the extra mile to help them succeed. Her dedication came in handy when her district took in children who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. She describes working with Katrina survivors as one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of her teaching career.
Always on the lookout for new ways to keep her students engaged, Johnette has used music to teach mathematics, and even received the Baton Rouge Symphony Teacher of the Year Award for her efforts. She enjoys conducting math professional development workshops and believes that teachers who never stop learning are the key to students’ math achievement.
