We have been working on STEM/ STEAM activities for some time now. While I have the science, math, art and engineering activities pretty well situated finding suitable technology has been harder for me to incorporate. When we look for new toys we are always looking at what and how the kids will be learning from them. By introducing children to the fun of coding and puzzle solving with this colorful, programmable mouse with a build-able customizable maze we have introduced our technology. This toy offers a great way to introduce young children to science, technology, engineering, and math. Children program the mouse with easy push-button controls to follow their created maze and find the cheese. The Mouse lights up and makes adorable sounds setup is perfect for tabletop or floor play. My children love setting the maze up in different ways. Children experience STEM through hands-on activities and experiments while challenging them to think critically, solve problems effectively. While this toy is definitely ideal for ages five plus my three year old also loves helping his big brother and sister set up the maze and he really enjoys watching the mouse after it has been programmed go through the maze. I have also let me try coding just on a much smaller scale where the mouse only needs to be programed one to five paces. If it is nice and simple my three year old can feel accomplished and we can work towards more complicated coding. There are also two different kinds of cards that come with the Learning Resources Stem Robot Mouse Coding Activity Set. One type of card is a maze card that shows examples of mazes you can setup, they help to give ideas. My kids do prefer creating their own mazes. But it is also a learning experience to try and duplicate and follow an example. The other type of card is one that helps with the coding. The cards have the symbols for the coding patterns so you lay out each card in front of you so you can see t

I really love the concept of this activity, and my 4 year old son enjoyed learning how to program the mouse. I was really excited to see him learning and understanding the concept of thinking ahead and planning the steps the mouse needed to take. However, the mouse stopped working the first day that we got the product (we received this free as part of a Chatterbox package). We tried brand new batteries, rechargeable batteries, everything. The mouse lights up and makes noises, but it does not move forward in any direction any longer. For the price, I would have been really disappointed in this lack of durability. I was considering purchasing another mouse so that he could continue to use the kit, but at a price of nearly $25, I am hesitant to buy it and have it not last either. I don't know if we got a fluke or what, but it was a bummer.** update to add that Learning Resources has contacted me and promised to send me a new mouse, which was really nice of them and I applaud them for standing behind their products. Will update once we receive this new mouse.

Awesome idea and seems like a good product, but after running it 1 time, the mouse no longer follows the input commands. It will sometimes more forward 1 step, but no longer turns or does multiple commands. Hard reset, new batteries etc don't help it either.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Hi Dr. Phil - Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. A sick mouse is never cool when coding! Please contact me directly at email@example.com and allow me to make things right. Thank you -Selene

I bought these for use at our school, but tried it first with my 6 year old son. He loved it!! He loved setting up the parts to match the cards and he let out a cheer when the mouse got the cheese! This is a great intro to coding and computer science. There are other similar products out there, but this is a great product for a lower price. The orange tunnels don't fit super well so I tend to just reposition them wherever I feel they should be. The mouse doesn't always turn a full 90 degrees depending on the surface of play, but a simple nudge will set him back on track. I'd recommend it to others!

Code & Go Robot Mouse Activity Set
from South Carolina
Code & Go Robot Mouse Activity SetWhat an awesome learning I wanted to share this really neat learning & building hands-on coding skills. The neat thing about this is your children can build their own maze, and then they can use the coding cards to create a step by step to create a path for the programmable robot "Colby Mouse". The next step was to program the sequence of steps, and then watch Colby Mouse find the cheese. My granddaughter had a blast with creating the different paths for Colby Mouse to follow and to find the cheese. All, while she is, was playing with this she was learning to create paths and learning skills. Now, what comes in the Code & Go Robot Mouse Activity Set includes 30 double sided coding cards, cheese wedge, 10 doubled sided activity cards and an activity guide to provide a hands-on introduction to coding concepts. Now on to creating your own path, there are 16 maze grids to create a 20" x 20" maze board, 22 maze wall, and 3 tunnels for the endless possibilities. Now for the cute Colby Mouse he lights up, makes sounds, and Colby Mouse has 2-speed features along with colorful buttons that match the coding cards which makes for easy programming and sequencing. Colby Mouse takes 3 AAA batteries (Not Included in the Kit). With this Maze, you can add multiple players with Jack, the programmable Robot Mouse (Not Included in the Kit) you would have to purchase the add-ons. This is a great skill learning game for children and simple for them to setup.

Great for Makerspaces

I use Robot Mouse in my Makerspace in the Library and during our lunchtime Coding Club. I absolutely LOVE this product. It is easy to understand, interactive, and FUN! The color coded buttons on the top of the mouse make it easy for the students to think through and set up the "line of code" and the pre-made maps are very helpful. Kids from 6-11 years old have thoroughly enjoyed it when I have pulled it out. The thought process that they have to use is a great lead in to talking about coding and how coding has to be specific and step-by-step. Bottom line: I would recommend this to any educator in an elementary setting who is interested in teaching kids about coding or even just thinking logically.

My kids absolutely LOVED this, especially my 8 year old. The first time we played with it, he played with it for almost 2 hours. He whizzed right through the 20 cards and started creating his own mazes and "obstacle courses" for Colby the mouse. Set up and clean up was easy, the kids loved the little noises Colby made when he connected with the cheese, and they loved how his eyes lit up. I'm very satisfied and happy with this toy, and I'm sure we'll get a lot of use out of it.

This is a great idea for coding! I even bought a second mouse. However after just a bit of use my blue code and go mouse doesn't go straight. It goes in circles . something is wrong with the metal ball at the tip! Can't find ant warranty info. If I could return it for a working model I would be happy. The extra purple mouse I bought works great.

This game challenged my gifted 7 year old in ways I couldn't do on my own. The patterns and methodology behind his thought process was fascinating. It takes a lot to grab his attention, but this game of skill and thinking certainly did.
