My daughter had an earlier version of the Pretend and Play cash register when she was growing up, and it lasted throughout her childhood. She played with it often, incorporating it into her play shopping, particularly grocery shopping play. She's grown now, and this past week I went shopping for my nephew, who's about to turn 3. He's been playing shopping-for-groceries at home, so I wanted to get him toys to enhance his play. When I went looking, I found cash registers that looked like they wouldn't last and were too flashy. I wanted something to enhance his imagination, not take it over. With play food, I wanted realistic looking healthy whole food, and most of what I found was cheap looking and included a lot of processed foods. I did find a few viable options, but they were sets of just 6-8 fruits/vegetables. So I went online to search, and that's when I found Learning Resources and remembered my daughter had their cash register!

Here at Learning Resources I found everything I was looking for, in several combination! I ended up buying this great cash register... it's solar powered (I love that!!!) and simple enough to encourage imaginative play, yet sophisticated enough for my nephew to grow with as he develops computation skills. I also bought him lots of healthy quality play food! In case you're interested, I bought him the Bushel of Veggies, the Bushel of Fruit, and the Munch It set. I'm so happy to find everything I was looking for!

    Customer Service:
My experience with the people at Learning Resources is the main reason I'm writing this review. The staff is amazing. I called them at least half a dozen times while deciding what to get for my nephew. I had questions about everything, the products, retailers, prices, shipping, return and warranty policies, and details about ordering. I spoke to 3-4 different people on staff throughout the process, and they were all so pleasant, helpful, and patient. Every single one of them. What a pleasure!

In my research for these toys, I found it was easier to shop and purchase online with Learning Resources. They have the full line of options to chose from, great service, and prices equivalent even to Amazon.com ... but with the latest edition of each product! I will shop here again!

I loved that it wasn't battery powered, that it was a real calculator and money was big enough not to be a choking hazard. In other words, good for several ages. I'm a day care provider and have children of different ages, so this appealed to me. However, I was disappointed to find that the paper money slots aren't sloped, so none of us finds it easy to get it in and out. I've ended up just using the coins because the paper money slots are frustrating. I would have returned it to you, but didn't want the hassle of wrapping and paying for postage.

Comments about Learning Resources Pretend & Play® Calculator Cash Register:

I've had similar models of this register in classrooms (Head Start Director) and typically love these products. So when my 4 year old son wanted this for Christmas, I was more than happy to oblige! Unfortunately, it's pretty awful. Unless the "solar strip" has a flashlight shining directly into it or the register is tilted towards the sky (light), the calculator doesn't work at all. Needless to say, this was a bust and my kids are pretty upset that it doesn't work, as am I.

Comments about Learning Resources Pretend & Play® Calculator Cash Register:

My 5.5 yo grandson loves to play a clerk, even at the park he will use stones mulch pieces to act as money and 'sell' you something from the playscape 'store'. He is learning to work on addition and subtraction so this is a dual purpose toy. He was excited to get it and had been playing with it. I have been teaching him to use the calculator that is part of the register.

If there is one thing I would have preferred on it was more like a 9 digit calculator and a calculator chip that left everything on the display. It is hard to use it for teaching 5+5=10 when after entering the 5+ it clears the display and after entering the 5= it clears the display to show the 10. would be better for them to comprehend the function if the display showed 5+5=10. With a 10 digit display you could teach up to 99+99=198. Beyond that I think they would have the concept and would not be playing with this type of top.

This was a gift for my 3 year old grandson. He loves pressing the calculator buttons and saying the numbers that appear. He also gives money to us and we pretend to buy something. We pay him the money and he gives us change. As he gets older, I can imagine him learning the value of the coins and currency, and learning to add and subtract.
