We have been looking for fun and educational activities to keep us busy during the hot Summer months. My kids and I try and stay indoors in the afternoons, and out of the hot Vegas sun. Learning games are always a fun way for us to do something indoors. Learning Resources offers a great selection of learning materials that can help you make learning fun during the Summer, or any time of year. They offer materials in a variety of different subjects and they offer materials for all different ability levels.

We received a really fun game from Learning Resources. Their Stacker Crackers Game is really fun, but it's also super cute! My kids really enjoyed the fun packaging. It looks like a box of cracker, but inside is a game. The packaging also has the directions on how to play on the package. The neat part is that it is written to look like an ingredient list. The game consists of crackers and cheese that are made out of cardboard. Each player picks from the box. They then read the word. The goal is to change any sound in the word. If your word is dog, then you could change it to something like dot or hog. The player then gets to keep the card if they are correct. You then stack your cheese and crackers on top of each other. If a player chooses a stack attack card, then you have to place all your cards back in the cracker box. This is really a fun game. I even enjoy playing it.

Comments about Learning Resources Stacker Crackers™ Sound Swap Game:

If you are looking for a fun, engaging game for your kindergarten or beginning first grade students, to help them with blending, segmenting, sound substitution and rhyming, look no further! The game comes in a cute yellow box and really looks like something in my snack drawer! The box is filled with several different shaped cheese and crackers, which are very, very durable and incredibly realistic. Each shape is labeled with a CVC word. There is also a STACK ATTACK card. More on this later...

To play the game, students choose a card out of the box (without looking) and read the CVC word out loud and show the group. Then, they replace one of the sounds with a different sound to make a new word. The first several times we played, the children replaced the first sound. For example, if they chose a card with the word net, they can say set. Most of the children were able to come up with their own new word, but sometimes I gave a hint, like, change "nnnn" to "ssss". This way of playing the game is great for students who need to practice rhyming. We also played the game by changing the last sound. If the children say a new word correctly, they get to keep their cheese or cracker. If they don't, it goes in the discard pile. I used a basket to hold the discards. The object of the game is to earn as many cards as you can and make a stack of them. But you can't play with your stack because if your stack falls down, you must put all your cards in the discard pile.

Remember the STACK ATTACK card? Getting one of those is a bummer because that means you have to put your whole stack into the discard pile! These two cuties were NOT happy about that! Neither was I! I think I chose the most STACK ATTACK cards of all my students! I didn't win one game! And I played a lot of games!

Stacker Crackers is a GREAT game and I highly recommend it for every kindergarten and first grade classroom. It is best played in a small group, like at a station or during a reading group. Once every child played the game a few times, they were able to play it independently at the Word Work Station. This game is one of the most popular learning games in my classroom.

Great for Reading and Spelling Skills!

Comments about Learning Resources Stacker Crackers™ Sound Swap Game:

My five year old daughter has benefited greatly from this game! We've discovered that she's very hands-on with learning new things and responds extremely well if she's playing games of any kind. If your child has a similar learning style, I think this game would be very good in enhancing and challenging reading and spelling skills!

If you don't have a lot of space or even if you do, the compact size (Box measures 2.75"L x 2.75"W x 7"H.) of the Stacker Cracker game is great! The box is quite durable and the lid stays on without worry of it coming off and spilling the pieces everywhere. There's also no trouble in misplacing the game instructions as they are printed right on the side of the game box!

How the game works is that a child will pull out one of the three letter word cheese or cracker card (90 are included). They will then attempt to create a new word only changing one of the letters either in the beginning, middle, or end. For instance, if you pull out a card that has the word CAT, you can than change that word to perhaps hat, cot, or cab. When the child correctly creates a new word they will place the card face down in front of them and begin to create a stack of crackers and cheese. If they pull out a SNACK ATTACK (10 are included) card they'll have to put their stack back into the box and begin again. The player with the tallest stack at the end of the game wins!

This game is recommend for children ages 5 and up and could be played with a number of children. You could use the game one on one as I sometime do with my daughter to sharpen reading and spelling skills. My daughter really enjoys the game and gets pretty excited to see how high her stack can go! She often asks when she can play the game again, which is music to my ears because reading and spelling usually isn't her favorite subject!
