Comments about Learning Resources Word of the Week, Grade 3-4:
Every Monday morning we have a new word. I cover up the meaning to begin with and I don't show the comic yet either. First we figure out how to say the word and the students discuss what they think it means. They pay attention to words it sounds like or rhymes with, the different contexts they have heard it used in, etc. Once we discuss this we read the comic and revise our predictions based on context clues. Finally we look at the meaning. From there we create oral stories or sentences using the word of the week. We review the words from the previous weeks as well. I record the words on cards and we hang them up on the word of the week word wall. The students love the words... parents are amazed about the words their kids are using. Now at the end of the year, I have many stories about all the places my students find these words or hear them. They are always excited to see the words being used. The kids have internalized these words and use them when they talk and they show up each day in their writing!
